Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott is launching a US$250 million “Open Call” to fund community-focused nonprofits in such initiatives as healthcare, education, housing, civic engagement, and more.

Through her organization Yield Giving, Scott plans to make unrestricted US$1 million donations to 250 nonprofits. This creates a “new pathway to support for organizations making positive change in their communities,” she said in a statement.

“Teams on the front lines of challenges have insights no one else can offer, so there are three big headlines here in my heart: Community changemakers can nominate themselves. Community changemakers get feedback from their peers. Community changemakers have a powerful role in funding decisions,” Scott said.

To apply, organizations are required to have an annual operating budget of between US$1 million and US$5 million for at least two of the last four fiscal years.

Scott, 52, a novelist and ex-wife of Amazon’s founder Jeff Bezos, began her philanthropic endeavors in the summer of 2019. She made large, unrestricted gifts to a wide-range of nonprofit organizations including the arts, women-led groups—from the Girl Scouts to Planned Parenthood—and organizations that prioritize equity.

So far, she has given more than US$14 billion in unrestricted funds to about 1,600 nonprofit organizations, according to Yield Giving.
