A New York-based producer of microgreens and sustainably raised fish plans to build what it says is the world’s largest vertical farm in Northeast Pennsylvania.
Upward Farms, a Brooklyn aquaponic farming company that has rapidly grown since its 2013 founding, announced Jan. 18 that it intends to establish a 250,000-square-foot vertical farm in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. The company expects the facility — it’s third — to begin operations in early 2023, supplying locally sourced microgreens and striped bass to consumers in the U.S. Northeast and beyond.
The new indoor farm will enable Upward Farms to scale its production of microgreens. The company, which advocates for localizing the production of perishable foods, says 90% of leafy greens for U.S. consumers are grown on the West Coast and 90% of seafood is imported. The Pennsylvania farm will utilize waste from its striped bass to organically fertilize the company’s microgreens.
