In many workplaces today, especially in small industrial and construction businesses, workplace safety is often managed by a human resources professional such as an HR Specialist or a Worker’s Compensation Coordinator. However, for most human resources professionals who manage workplace safety, it is an additional responsibility for them, rather than their primary or sole responsibility. They manage workplace safety in addition to their normal hiring, benefits, training, and other tasks. Managing workplace safety with a full slate of other, and largely unrelated, job tasks can be quite challenging.

Below are some tips that can help human resources professionals navigate those challenges and be successful in managing workplace safety efficiently and effectively.

1. Ensure Timely Incident Reporting and Investigation

The sooner employee injury and illness and property damage incidents are reported and investigated, the sooner the cause of the incident can be identified and mitigated to prevent a recurrence. Employees should always report incidents to their manager immediately and incidents should always be investigated as soon as possible. Human resources professionals can help ensure that incidents are reported and investigated in a timely manner by utilizing OSHA resources and communicating to employees and managers the importance of doing so.
